I have a Tibetan Singing Bowl similar to these except that mine has designs all over it. I’ll be honest, I love mine. My brother brought it back from his gap year trip to Nepal and various other countries in that part of the world. I’ve used it and had great success with it. It helps me relax and get into my meditations. I even use it at school when my students need to quiet down. So when I heard about sound baths, or sound healing, I was excited by the idea. Particularly after my experience with Biofield Tuning!
What it a sound bath? Loosely, it’s listening to bowls, gongs, cymbals, rainsticks, and rattles making a variety of sounds. Why? Because Sound impacts how your brain is organized and we are essentially a giant musical instrument that responds to the sounds in nature but also the man made sounds in a sound bath. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t have nature sounds in a sound bath but they are generally being manipulated by man. For example, the recording of the waterfall is natural but it was recorded and will be played back on a device.
This is one of dozens of examples of a sound bath you can find on YouTube. But you could also just as easily listen to something like my favorite waterfall and nature sounds recording to relax yourself for an extended period of time, or so it feels more natural. Or, I’m just throwing this out there, you could do what I’m doing right now since I had to open them up to get the links, and listen to them both at the same time. Honestly, it’s absolutely heavenly.
Now I’ve completely lost my train of thought. Really, I’m going to have to come back and finish this after a bit because right now I feel an overwhelming urge to meditate.
…..
Ok, I’m back and I’m both recharged and envigorated and feeling very calm while also feeling very energized. It’s kind of hard to explain actually. But if that isn’t a strong vote in favor of trying a sound bath I don’t know what it would take to make you try one! However, the important part is that I’m back and I’m ready to share some final thoughts.
The concept may sound strange, but once you hear a sound bath and you take a little time to meditate or even just breathe while listening to either someone making the sounds for you, like at a meditation or yoga retreat; or listening to a recording (or making one of your own for that matter) it becomes increasingly clear that there is something that feels healing as you are listening. You feel calmer, breathe deeper, and the little line you get between your eyebrow disappears. And, let’s be honest, who couldn’t use a little bit more of that in your life?
Next time I’ll be sharing how sound baths led me to try yoga…on the floor in my living room with a virtual class.
