Oh goody, another weird craft…

I seriously can’t imagine completing this thing. It’s not about being patient. I mean, ok, partly it is, but it’s also about the fact that the end result is going to be hideous.

Yes, the image at the bottom of the picture is of some kind of crystal bedecked monstrosity that I’m apparently supposed to put together with metal wire, crystals, and glue, which almost made me high when I opened the package. I can see the appeal of napkin rings or magnets because they are something you can use. But two metal circles linked with crystals? What is the world would possess me to hang that in my window? I have crystals to hang in my window to make rainbows when the light catches them. They are tiny and delicate, not like this huge heavy thing.

‘So what…just do it!’ Or else ‘Just throw it out, who cares?’ are both perfectly acceptable replies to this project. However, I can’t figure out which is the way to go. Do I give up before I start because I don’t like that I’m making? Or do I deal with it because it might be interesting to work with wire and beads? Do I ditch it because it is completely unappealing? Or do I stick with it because I will learn a new skill, stringing beads on wire, and produce something that shows my ability to use that new skill?

The idea of trying something new has brought me from float tanks, to keto cooking, to knitting, to craft projects. Have I run out of ‘new things’ to try?

Absolutely not. I’m never going to stop learning new things. I’m just not sure this particular thing is going to the pantheon of favorite projects or experiences.

Maybe the lesson in this one is to change the expectations about what it will look like when it’s done. Maybe this is the universe telling me to throw out the directions and create something that has the capacity to make me smile and is uniquely me, instead of a carbon copy of some generic and weirdly bedazzled window hanging.

So I guess I’ll give it a go and see if the end result is something I like. Can’t hurt to give it a try, right?
