The Saga Continues…

I am at it again, trying to find (and by find I mean make) the perfect sugar free brownie.

This time I decided to go more commercial and try the brand name Pillsbury and the slightly less mainstream, but in the sugar free community still very well known, Swerve. I also added, as you can see, chocolate chips, because I dearly love biting into a brownie with chocolaty chunks in it. I used Lily’s sugar free chocolate chips because there isn’t much point to making sugar free brownie mix and then throwing regular chocolate chips into it.

They smelled amazing and scent is such a huge part of enjoying creating the perfect brownie that I was impressed and my hopes rose a little. I’ve been let down before though, so I wasn’t going to get ahead of myself. I was also enjoying the feeling of being a little kid again. For me, there is very little that brings back childhood memories as fast as baking does. I vividly remember being in the kitchen with my mother and also with my grandmother, and the warmth of those memories made the wait more tolerable.

But there is only so long a person can wait to try a brownie, am I right? So as soon as they were done, I set them on a cooling rack and literally as soon as I could touch the pan; I cut a small piece and devoured it.

Since that gave me no time to enjoy the flavor, but I know that about myself, which is why I cut a small piece, I cut another small piece and this time I tried to slow down enough to savor it. When I really let myself taste them, I knew it was no contest. The Swerve, as much as I love them for trying, was a no go. It tasted ever so slightly bitter and had an aftertaste. The Pillsbury was actually pretty good, still not the perfect brownie, but I also realized after I had taken them out of the oven that I need to try a different sugar free chocolate chip to give the mix a fair chance to take top place. Next time I’m at the sugar free bakery, Chatila’s in Salem NH, I’ll pick up a container of their sugar free chocolate chips and try another box of Pillsbury.

I’m definitely getting close. Someday I’ll find my elusive perfect sugar free brownie and live happily ever after…lol

But for now I’m going to throw away the pan of brownies I won’t eat and cut the rest up so I don’t oversize them later when I’m hungry and see what the rest of the day has to offer.

Enjoy the day and the weekend!
